Professional guitarist bio
A professional guitarist for over 30 yeras, Seth's versatility as a musician spans performances and recordings in jazz, classical, blues, rock, and pop genres.
His performance credits include Grammy and Golden Globe nominated singer-guitarist Frank Stallone, Grammy-winning vocalist Nmon Ford, virtuoso bassist Jennifer Leitham, and pop-rock vocalists Kuh Ledesma and Pops Fernandez.
In addition to jazz and popular music concerts, he performs classical recitals as a soloist as well as in duos and trios. Aside from performing throughout North America, Seth has performed in England, France, Poland, Italy, China, and Japan.
He continues to perform in virtually every musical setting ranging from solo guitar to large ensembles.
Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Seth began his formal music education on the guitar at the age of 12 with Mark Burkert. One year later, he started taking lessons with Jazz Guitarist extraordinaire Jimmy Bruno. As Bruno's protégé, he spent the next seven years under Jimmy's tutelage. Interested in broadening his student's horizons, Bruno introduced a book authored by the great late-jazz pianist and educator Jimmy Amadie. This introduction led to a decade of improvisational and harmonic studies with Amadie.
Seth was awarded the sole guitar chair in the Pennsylvania All-State Jazz Band two years in a row (1992-94).
After graduating from high school, he was awarded a scholarship to the University of the Arts where he would complete his Bachelor's degree in jazz guitar performance in 1999. For the next four years, he kept a busy performing and teaching schedule. In 2003, he accepted a scholarship to the Claremont Graduate University to study with acclaimed guitarist-educator-luthier Jack Sanders. At Claremont Graduate University, he completed a Master's degree in classical guitar performance and a PhD in Musicology in 2009.
A passionate teacher for 25 years, he teaches guitar lessons and music education classes in the Berkeley and Pleasanton area and online. Among the many school where he has taught are: Scripps College, Mt. San Jacinto College, Haverford School, the Claremont Community School of Music, and Jimmy Bruno Guitar Workshop. He is also feature on the ViaGuitar Teacher Registry.
In November of 2013, his first book, a biography about the legendary jazz guitar player Billy Bean, was published by Midoriyama Publishing. Entitled Billy Bean: The Life and Music of a Jazz Guitar Legend, the book provides an in-depth biography of Bean's life and catalog of his autograph manuscripts.
A Guitarist's Guide to Chord Construction. Volume 1: Root-Position Voicings was released in 2015. His latest book (2018), A Guitarist's Guide to Chord Construction. Volume 2: Inversions, completes the Chord Construction series that provides guitar players a creative and practical approach to constructing chords of all families from three to six notes.
